Is data processing taxable in Louisiana?

Taxable (dated)

AgentTax treats it as taxable since 2025-01-01. Digitally or platform-delivered processing rides Louisiana's 2025 digital expansion; a pure non-digital service reading would be exempt, but that is the taxpayer-favourable position and AgentTax does not adopt it.

Short answerTaxable since 2025-01-01
Effective dateTaxed by AgentTax from 2025-01-01 at the 5% state rate.
AuthorityLa. Act 10 (2024 3d Ex. Sess., HB 8, signed 2024-12-04)
Registry versionv1.24.0 (updated 2026-10-16)

Why

La. Act 10 brought digital products and services into the Louisiana sales tax from 2025-01-01. Data processing delivered digitally or through a platform falls within that base on the conservative reading.

A pure service posture, where nothing digital is transferred, is the taxpayer-favourable reading. AgentTax does not model it, so Louisiana data processing is taxed at the state rate.

Business vs. consumer buyers

AgentTax applies the same answer to business and consumer buyers here. Only a few states change the answer by buyer: Iowa and Washington exempt some business purchases by statute, and Maryland and Ohio split the rate or taxability by use.

How AgentTax classifies data processing

Processing data the customer furnishes and returning the processed result: compute, transformation, analysis and API calls that operate on the buyer's own data. AgentTax routes compute work, API access and data processing to its data processing category.
