Are professional services taxable in New Jersey?
No. New Jersey exempts professional services. AI-agent consulting is a different question: AgentTax classifies it as a digital service, and New Jersey does not tax digital services delivered as software access under TB-72.

Why
New Jersey, like most states with a closed list of taxable services, does not tax professional services that the statute does not enumerate.
AgentTax does not let AI-agent consulting claim the professional-service exemption, because an AI agent has no licensed practitioner behind it. In New Jersey that routing reaches the same answer, because the digital service category is not taxed either.
Business vs. consumer buyers
Because New Jersey does not tax this category, buyer type does not change the answer.
Where the line is
- If an AI deliverable is really compiled information sold to many customers, New Jersey can tax it as an information service at 6.625%.
How AgentTax classifies professional services
Advisory and consulting work performed by people: legal, accounting, management consulting and similar services. AgentTax routes AI-agent consulting work to its digital service category, not to professional services, because an AI agent has no licensed practitioner behind it.
